Hypo Clearing Agent

Washing AidWorking Solution
Kodak/IlfordDilution: Full strength (2% solution)

Hypo Clearing Agent (HCA) is the standard wash-aid for B&W photography — used between fixing and final wash to displace residual thiosulfate from the emulsion, dramatically reducing wash time and improving archival permanence. Kodak Hypo Clearing Agent has been the dominant commercial product since the 1950s; Heico Perma Wash is the equivalent alternative (see separate recipe).

Key features

  • Sodium sulfite-based wash-aid; the active ingredient is sulfite at moderate concentration (~20 g/L in working solution)
  • Reduces fiber wash time from 60+ min to ~15-20 min for archival residual-thiosulfate levels
  • Required for selenium toning — also serves as the carrier solution for KRST toning baths
  • Multi-use for paper: capacity ~30-50 8x10 prints per liter of working solution

Workflow

Standard procedure for fiber prints (the use case where HCA matters most):

  1. Fix print thoroughly (per fixer instructions)
  2. Initial water rinse: 1-2 minutes running water to remove gross fixer carry-over
  3. HCA bath: 2-3 minutes in HCA working solution at 20°C, gentle agitation
  4. Final wash: 15-20 minutes running water (vs 60+ min without HCA)

For RC prints: HCA is generally unnecessary — RC paper washes in 2-3 min regardless.

Practical notes

  • Mix HCA from individual chemicals (sodium sulfite primarily) or buy commercial Kodak HCA powder packets
  • Working solution keeps 6+ months sealed
  • Working solution capacity: ~30-50 8x10 fiber prints per liter
  • Required for selenium toning — the KRST toning bath uses HCA working solution as the carrier (prevents selenium stain)
  • Heico Perma Wash is functionally equivalent — choose by availability/price
  • PPE: nitrile gloves; mild irritation potential

Mixing Instructions

Dissolve 20g of sodium sulfite (anhydrous) in 1 liter of water at 20°C. Stir until dissolved — sodium sulfite dissolves easily at room temperature. The solution is ready to use immediately. For fiber-based prints: after fixing, rinse prints in running water for 1 minute, then soak in HCA for 2-3 minutes with gentle agitation, then wash for 10-20 minutes. For film: 1-2 minute bath after fixing, then a 5-minute wash. Working solution keeps about 1 week; discard if it smells of sulfur.
